EXPERIENCE A COFFEE GROWN IN CLOUDS OF CENTRAL KENYA

Thiriku Cooperative is located in the famous coffee region of Nyeri in Central Kenya. Over the years, Thiriku has garnered a reputation for consistently producing some of the area’s finest coffee. The washing station is at one of the highest elevations for processing coffee in all of Kenya. The factory receives SL28 and SL34 coffee cherries from its 2500 members who farm small plots of land surrounding the station. Due to its lofty location, Thiriku Cooperative experiences a cooler micro-climate resulting in slower fruit maturation and longer fermentation times. In 2020, Thiriku Coffee Cooperative partnered with the importer Trabocca and their Kenya Project and farmers began making sh121 (Kenyan Shilling) per kilogram of cherry delivered to the wet mill. This is significantly higher than the average h30-Sh60 per kilo that the factory had paid farmers in the previous seasons. This partnership has helped the farmers develop and produce high quality and traceable coffee while ensuring they are paid fairly and directly. Since partnering with Thiriku Cooperative in 2018, we’re excited to see positive developments not only in the coffee produced but to the community that surrounds Nyeri. This year, we’re finding juicy notes of cherry and tangerine, with brown sugar sweetness in this full bodied cup.
